Ranjan Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954, in Dibrugarh, Assam. He came from a respected family, and his father Kesab Chandra Gogoi was also a former Chief Minister of Assam. Justice Gogoi studied at Delhi University and became a judge because he wanted to serve justice to the people of India.
He became a judge of the Supreme Court in 2012. In 2018, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of India. During his time, he worked on many important cases. One of the most famous was the Ayodhya case, where the Supreme Court gave the final decision on the long-standing Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue.
He also worked on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam to identify legal citizens. This was very important for the people of Assam. He also made changes in the court system to help it become faster and more transparent.
After he retired in 2019, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House of Parliament). This decision was discussed a lot in newspapers and on TV. Some people supported it, while others had different opinions.
