The name Sitajakhala comes from two words — Sita, referring to Goddess Sita from the Ramayana, and Jakhala, meaning steps or ladder in the local Assamese dialect. According to long-preserved folklore, these stone steps were created by Maharishi Valmiki to help Goddess Sita reach the river during her stay in the forest. This belief makes Sitajakhala one of the few places in Northeast India directly connected to the life journey of Sita.
Mythological narratives say that Sitajakhala is the location where Laxman left Goddess Sita after receiving Lord Rama’s instructions during her exile. It is also believed that Sita lived here during her pregnancy and gave birth to her twin sons, Luv and Kush, in the ashram of Sage Valmiki, located on the opposite hill.
