In Depth

The Kakodonga River itself forms part of the natural boundary between the two districts, creating a picturesque landscape of flowing water, greenery and open riverbanks. The river originates in the Naga Hills and passes through the plains of Assam before becoming part of the Brahmaputra river system.

The sweeping curve of the river is the main attraction of this destination. Surrounded by greenery, the bend offers a peaceful setting away from busy town areas and is suitable for visitors looking for a quiet picnic or short nature outing. The open landscape also provides attractive views during sunrise and sunset, while the river and surrounding vegetation create good opportunities for landscape photography.

One of the most distinctive features of Kakodonga River Bend is its seasonal floral display. Around May and June, particularly from mid-May to mid-June, the riverbanks can take on shades of pink and purple as seasonal wildflowers appear across the surrounding landscape. This colourful transformation has made the location increasingly popular among nature lovers, photographers and visitors interested in discovering lesser-known places in Assam.

The river environment also supports local birdlife, making the area interesting for casual birdwatching. Visitors may also see local fishermen carrying out traditional fishing activities along the river. During the cooler months, especially from October to February, the pleasant weather makes the area suitable for relaxed sightseeing and picnics, although the vegetation and appearance of the riverbanks change with the season.

Kakodonga River Bend is located just north of the Assam Trunk Road (NH 715) near Dergaon and can be approached by road. However, the site remains largely natural, with limited facilities directly beside the river. Visitors should therefore carry drinking water, food, basic picnic supplies and bags for collecting their waste. During warmer and wetter periods, mosquitoes and insects may be common, so carrying suitable insect repellent is advisable.

With its graceful river curve, seasonal flowers, peaceful surroundings and rural landscape, Kakodonga River Bend offers a refreshing nature experience for travellers exploring Golaghat and the adjoining Jorhat region.
