In Depth
The temple is known for its devotional atmosphere, daily worship, kirtan sessions, religious classes and prasadam distribution. Its surroundings also provide a pleasant environment for people looking to spend some quiet time away from the busy parts of the city.
History and Establishment
The Hare Krishna Movement began its activities in Guwahati in 2010 from a modest rented residence in the Uzan Bazar area. Its initial work focused on sharing the message of the Bhagavad Gita, introducing people to the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, distributing spiritual books written by Srila Prabhupada and organising food distribution services.
As the movement expanded, a permanent temple project was developed in North Guwahati. Hare Krishna Mandir was formally inaugurated on 15 March 2021 at Ghorajan, marking an important step in the organisation's spiritual and community activities. The centre follows the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Vedic literature, inspired by the work of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.
Presiding Deities and Temple Worship
The temple houses three principal sets of deities: Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar, Sri Sri Jagannath Baladev Subhadra Mai, and Sri Sri Nitai Gauranga. Devotees visit the shrine to offer prayers, attend aarti and participate in devotional singing.
Daily activities include Mangala Arati, japa meditation, Guru Puja, kirtan, Raj Bhog Arati and evening worship. Spiritual discourses and classes based on the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam are also part of the temple's regular programme. These activities provide visitors with an opportunity to understand Krishna consciousness and learn about devotional practices.
Daily Temple Timings and Prasadam
Hare Krishna Mandir generally follows two daily visiting sessions. The morning programme begins early with Mangala Arati and meditation, followed by morning worship and religious classes. The temple reopens in the afternoon for its evening programme, which includes Tulasi Arati, Sandhya Arati, spiritual discussions and the concluding prayers.
Prasadam, food offered to the deities and later distributed to devotees, is an important part of the temple's service. Lunch and dinner prasadam are mentioned in the temple's daily schedule. Visitors planning to participate in these services should confirm the latest serving times with the temple administration before arrival.
There is no entry ticket for regular darshan. The temple also provides facilities such as a bookstore, green outdoor spaces and programmes for children's cultural and spiritual education. Parking and accessibility arrangements should be confirmed locally.
Festivals and Community Services
Janmashtami, the appearance day of Lord Krishna, is among the major celebrations at the temple. Other occasions, including Holi and festivals associated with Lord Jagannath and Lord Chaitanya, bring devotees together for prayers, kirtan and special worship. Festival schedules and visitor arrangements may differ from the normal daily routine.
Beyond temple worship, the Hare Krishna Movement Guwahati is involved in spiritual education and community welfare. Its activities include sharing religious literature, promoting devotional practices and supporting food distribution initiatives. The organisation's broader service work is intended to make spiritual learning and nutritious meals accessible to different sections of society.
