Where Is Assam's First Science City Located?

Assam's first Science City is located at Tapesia village in Sonapur, in the Kamrup (Metro) district near Guwahati. The state-of-the-art facility lies on the outskirts of the city, about 22 kilometers from Guwahati and around 3 kilometers south of National Highway 37. Spread across approximately 82 acres, the project was developed with an estimated cost of about Rs 300 crore and was ceremonially inaugurated on March 10, 2026 by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Detailed Notes

The Science City has been established through the joint efforts of the Assam Government and the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). The primary objective of the project is to promote scientific learning, curiosity, and research among students and young minds in the region.

The facility features two major galleries named Eureka and Space Odyssey, which provide interactive and educational science experiences. Visitors can also explore modern attractions such as Digital Adventure, Virtual Reality experiences, Fun with Science exhibits, an Astronomy Gallery, a Globe of Knowledge, and a Fire Theatre that makes scientific concepts engaging and easy to understand.

In addition to the current exhibits, several new attractions including a Science Discovery Centre, Science Innovation zones, a Science Park, a biodome, and a sky observatory are planned for future expansion. On the same occasion, five District Science Centres were also inaugurated in Amin Gaon, Majuli, Silchar, Kaliabor, and Bongaigaon to strengthen science education across Assam.
