Born on 27 July 2002 in Kandulimari village under Bokakhat in Golaghat district, Assam, Uma Chetry grew up in a humble family where determination and hard work shaped her early life. She is the only daughter among five siblings. As a child, she often played cricket with her brother and other boys in the neighborhood. Recognizing her passion for the game, her mother encouraged her to continue playing despite social stereotypes. Uma completed her schooling at Bokakhat Hindi High School while balancing academics with regular cricket practice.

Her cricketing journey began at the grassroots level in Assam, where she impressed coaches with her excellent wicketkeeping skills, quick reflexes, and dependable batting. She represented Assam in domestic cricket and consistently delivered strong performances, eventually earning selection for India A. Her performances in domestic tournaments established her as one of the country's rising wicketkeeper-batters.

In 2023, Uma represented India A in the ACC Women's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where she gained valuable international exposure. The same year, she was selected in India's squad for the Women's T20 International series against Bangladesh and was also included in the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. Although she did not make her senior debut immediately, her consistent improvement kept her firmly in the national setup.

Uma made her Women's T20 International debut for India against South Africa on 7 July 2024. With this achievement, she became the first female cricketer from Assam and the entire Northeast to play for the Indian senior women's cricket team. Her debut was celebrated across Assam as a landmark moment in the sporting history of the region.

She continued to be part of India's international squads in both T20 Internationals and One Day Internationals. In 2025, she made her Women's ODI debut during the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup against Bangladesh after being included in the squad following an injury to another wicketkeeper. She was also a member of the Indian team that won the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, further strengthening her reputation as an emerging international cricketer.

Apart from representing India, Uma Chetry has played domestic cricket for Assam and has been associated with UP Warriorz in the Women's Premier League (WPL). Competing alongside some of the world's best cricketers has significantly enhanced her experience and development as a professional player.

Uma is widely admired for her calm wicketkeeping, sharp game awareness, athletic fielding, and ability to contribute useful runs in the middle order. Her dedication, discipline, and perseverance have inspired many young girls from rural Assam and the Northeast to pursue cricket professionally. She represents a new generation of athletes proving that talent from remote regions can succeed at the highest level.

In recognition of her remarkable achievements, the Government of Assam honoured Uma Chetry with the prestigious Assam Saurav Award in 2025. The award acknowledged her historic contribution to sports and her role in bringing pride to Assam on the national and international stage.

As of today, Uma Chetry continues to represent Assam in domestic cricket while remaining an important member of the Indian women's cricket setup. With her talent, determination, and consistent performances, she is expected to play a significant role in the future of Indian women's cricket.
