Early Life
Tapan Kumar Deka was born on 25 February 1963 in Sarthebari of Barpeta district, Assam. Raised in an Assamese family, he developed a strong interest in academics and public affairs from an early age. During his student life, he remained actively associated with student movements and participated in various activities that strengthened his leadership qualities. His early exposure to social issues and public service helped shape his future career in the Indian Police Service.
Education
After completing his early education in Assam, Tapan Kumar Deka pursued higher studies in Physics and obtained a Master's degree. His academic background reflects his strong analytical ability and disciplined approach towards learning. Determined to serve the nation, he appeared for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination and successfully cleared it on his first attempt. In 1988, he joined the Indian Police Service and was allotted the Himachal Pradesh cadre.
IPS Career
Although he belonged to the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Tapan Kumar Deka spent most of his professional career serving the Intelligence Bureau on central deputation. Over the years, he handled several critical assignments involving intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism, internal security and strategic operations. His dedication, operational knowledge and leadership abilities helped him rise steadily through the organisation.
During his long association with the Intelligence Bureau, he served as Deputy Director, Joint Director, Additional Director and Special Director before being appointed as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He also headed the operations wing of the organisation for more than two decades, making him one of the most experienced intelligence officers in the country.

Tapan Kumar Deka has been closely associated with several major national security operations. Throughout his career, he worked extensively on counter-terrorism initiatives, intelligence coordination and investigations related to major terror incidents affecting the country. Director of the Intelligence Bureau
On 1 July 2022, Tapan Kumar Deka assumed charge as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, succeeding Arvind Kumar. As the head of India's premier internal intelligence agency, he was entrusted with overseeing intelligence operations related to national security, terrorism, border management, cyber threats and internal stability.
Under his leadership, the Intelligence Bureau focused on strengthening coordination among security agencies, enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms and improving surveillance capabilities across sensitive regions. His tenure witnessed continued efforts to tackle illegal infiltration, dismantle terror modules and address emerging security challenges involving technology, cybercrime and cross-border extremist activities.
