Early Life
Gopiram Bargayn Burabhakat was born on 1 January 1925 in Namkatani village of Majuli, Assam. His father was Gendhela Bora Bayan. At the age of five, he entered the historic Sri Sri Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, where he began his spiritual and artistic journey under the guidance of Burhabhakat Thanuram Sharma. From childhood, he embraced the disciplined life of a celibate devotee and devoted himself entirely to the study and practice of Sattriya culture.
Education and Training
His education was rooted in the traditional Sattra system, where he received extensive training in Sattriya dance, devotional music, Gayan-Bayan, Bhaona, Borgeet, Ojapali, and Vaishnavite philosophy. Instead of pursuing formal academic education, he mastered the ancient performing arts and religious practices that have been preserved within the Sattra institutions of Assam for centuries.
Career and Contribution to Sattriya Culture
For over seven decades, Gopiram Bargayn Burabhakat has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Sattriya traditions. In 1983, he formally assumed the responsibilities of Burhabhakat at Sri Sri Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, becoming one of its most respected cultural leaders.
He memorised and performed songs from 18 Assamese Bhaona dramas, 12 Ankiya Nats, numerous Ojapali performances, and 191 Borgeets composed by Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavdeva. He also became highly skilled in 34 Mela Ragas and 36 Bandha Ragas associated with Sattriya music.
Beyond performance, he contributed significantly to preserving Sattra traditions by conducting Namlogowa, Ghosa Kirtan, and other religious ceremonies. He also possessed remarkable craftsmanship and participated in constructing boats, Guru Asanas, statues, Namghars, Kirtan Ghars, stages, and other traditional structures within the Sattra.
As a respected guru, he trained more than 40 Vaishnavite devotees in Ojapali and over 20 Gayans, ensuring that the rich artistic heritage of Assam would continue through future generations.
National and Cultural Recognition
Gopiram Bargayn Burabhakat represented Assam at numerous cultural festivals and performances across India, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala, and several other states. Through Sattriya dance, Gayan-Bayan, and Bhaona performances, he introduced audiences across the country to Assam's unique spiritual and artistic traditions.
His dedication has helped preserve one of India's classical dance forms while strengthening the cultural identity of Majuli, the world's largest river island and an important centre of Neo-Vaishnavite culture.
