Born on 21 November 1933 in Jorhat, Assam, Dhirendra Nath Bezbaruah grew up in an environment that valued education and intellectual development. His parents were Surendra Nath Bezbaruah and Kamala Bezbaruah. After completing his education in Assam, he pursued higher studies in the United Kingdom and earned a postgraduate degree from the University of Reading. His biggest professional milestone came in 1983 when he became the founder editor of The Sentinel, a Guwahati-based English daily. Apart from his editorial responsibilities, Bezbaruah has made significant contributions to Assamese literature through translation. He translated several important Assamese literary works into English, making the rich literary heritage of Assam accessible to readers across India and abroad. One of his best-known translated works is The Cavern and Other Stories by noted Assamese writer Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia. Dhirendra Nath Bezbaruah has also played an important role in strengthening journalism institutions in India. He served as the President of the Editors Guild of India, becoming one of the few journalists from Northeast India to lead the prestigious organization. He was also the founder president of the Northeast Writers' Forum and remained associated with the Media Trust, Assam, contributing to the growth of journalism and literature in the region.
Over the decades, his commitment to professional ethics, freedom of the press, and responsible journalism has earned him widespread respect among journalists, academicians, and readers. Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism, one of India's most respected journalism awards. He also received the Katha Award for Translation for his literary contributions and the Nachiketa Samman in 2001. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, for his exceptional service to literature, education, and journalism.
