Life & Legacy
Born on 6 October 2000 in Meghai Jarani village of Sonitpur district, Assam, Ankushita was raised in a humble family. Her father, Rakesh Kumar, worked as a primary school teacher, while her mother, Ranjita Boro, has been associated with social service through a non-governmental organization. Growing up in a rural environment with limited sports infrastructure, she overcame financial and logistical challenges to pursue her dream of becoming a boxer.
Ankushita's journey into boxing began almost by chance when she participated in a local competition at a young age. Recognizing her natural talent, she travelled nearly 165 kilometres to attend the Sports Authority of India (SAI) trials at Golaghat. After earning selection, she received professional training under renowned coach Trideep Bora, who played a crucial role in shaping her career. She later improved her technical skills through guidance from international boxing coaches and regular exposure to elite competitions.
Her breakthrough came in 2017 when she won silver medals at the Balkan Youth International Boxing Championship in Bulgaria and the Ahmet Comert International Boxing Tournament in Turkey. The same year, she achieved global success by winning the gold medal in the 64 kg category at the AIBA Youth Women's World Boxing Championships in Guwahati. During the tournament, she defeated several highly ranked international boxers before overcoming Russia's Ekaterina Dynnik in the final. Her outstanding performance earned her the prestigious Best Boxer award.
Following her youth success, Ankushita smoothly transitioned into senior-level boxing. She won the gold medal at the Khelo India Youth Games, bronze at the Asian Women's Boxing Championships in 2022, silver medals at the Senior National Boxing Championships, and multiple gold medals at the National Games. Her consistent performances have made her one of India's leading contenders in the lightweight and welterweight divisions.
Ankushita has also represented India in Olympic qualification tournaments and several international championships. Although she narrowly missed qualifying for the Paris Olympics, her impressive performances against world-class opponents highlighted her technical excellence and fighting spirit. She continues to compete at the highest level while aiming for future international medals.
Apart from her sporting achievements, Ankushita was appointed Brand Ambassador of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign for Kamrup Metropolitan district, inspiring thousands of young girls to participate in sports. Her dedication, discipline, and determination have made her a role model for aspiring athletes across Assam and India.
