Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
Just 60 km away from Guwahati is Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is popular for deers and rhinos . This Sanctuary is around 2 hours drive from Guwahati. Pobitora or Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary which is situated in the famous Magical village of Mayong in the Marigaon district of Assam in India. It has a dense population of thre Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary covers 38.8 Sq. km. Though, the total notified area of the park is 38.80 square kilometres, only 16 square kilometres is the effective rhino habitat. Pobitora was declared a reserved forest in 1971 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1987. It covers flat flood plains and a hillock (Raja Mayong).
 
Pobitora is mainly famous for its great Indian one horned Rhinoceros. There are around 80 such Rhinoceros that can be seen easily around.  Besides Rhinoceros the other animals are Asiatic Buffalo, Leopard, Wild bear, civet cat etc. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to more than 2000 migratory birds and various reptiles.
 
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is quite hilly and thus due to the difference in altitudes, one can find a diverse vegetation. The vegetation of the place may vary according to the height of the place. The sanctuary is fully with a large numbers of coconut trees growing all over the place.
 
Pobitora has exceeded its rhino-bearing capacity and is overpopulated. The animals have begun moving outside the sanctuary in search of food, and chances of serious man-animal conflict are quite rife. Besides, the straying animals carry the risk of contracting diseases that afflict domestic animals. Under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV 2020) which is a joint programme of the department of environment & forests, Govt of Assam, WWF India, the International Rhino Foundation and the US fish & wildlife service, six rhinos were translocated from Pobitora and re-inroduced into the Manas National Park between December 2010 and January 2011. Earlier, under the same programme, two rhinos were similarly translocated from Pobitora to the Manas national Park in 2008.

Best time to Travel Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is November to March.

Airport : The nearest Airport to the wildlife sanctuary is Guwahati.

Railhead : Guwahati is well-connected to all the major cities of the country by rail. One can easily reach the park by bus or other vehicles from the Guwahati railhead.

Road Transport : Guwahati can be accessed by road from any part of Assam. Once in Guwahati, you can easily reach the park by any means of road transport.

Staying near the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Guwahati offers several private hotels ranging from luxury to budget-friendly ones. Fish is a major delicacy in Assam and one can savour mouthwatering curries in and around Paltan Bazar at cheap rates. There are excellent accommodation facilities in and around Guwahati in Assam.
